What makes barre3 different from other exercises?
barre3 is a mind and body exercise. We focus on establishing and maintaining good spinal alignment as we do our exercises. We aim to transfer the same body awareness in our everyday activities.
Are there any restrictions?
To ensure safety, we will require a medical certificate from those who have medical conditions and issues. Pregnant women will also be requested to show a medical clearance from their doctors.
Who can do barre3? Do I need experience?
We cater to everyone. Yoga practitioners, Pilates aficionados, dancers, athletes, or any beginners with a passion for good health. It is for men and women alike.
Will barre3 exercises make me lose weight?
This is one question that we need to qualify. In terms of shedding pounds, there may be a minimal loss for the first few sessions. But if what you really mean is to make you look slimmer, definitely YES!
barre3’s aim is muscular conditioning, thereby toning muscles. More toned muscles mean a more slender body. What we actually promote is INCH LOSS more than weight loss. (Needless to say, you may have lost a lot of weight but still be categorized as fat.)
Is barre3 going to help me burn fat?
Yes. barre3 develops muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility – 3 very important components of fitness. It will greatly help make your body more efficient in burning fat. It’s a great way to supplement your running, cycling and other aerobic activities. Coupled with good nutrition, it will surely improve your fitness level, which leads to lower fat percentage.
I do weights in the gym, can I still do this?
Yes. In barre3, we use low resistance and high repetitions, which lengthens your muscles. Depending on your goal, it is imperative that you work closely with your personal gym trainer and listen to your barre3 instructor to make it work for you.
I do yoga, is it the same?
Certain barre3 movements are held for long counts and are yoga-inspired. It is also similar to the practice in that you have to be very mentally aware of how you place your body in space.
I already do pilates, how is it similar to barre3?
barre3 uses the same principle of establishing neutral spine first before getting into movement. Usage of mostly bodyweight and small equipment also helps create a lot of body awareness while giving you a different feel of your neutral spine.
I run a lot. Will this complement my sport?
Yes. It actually complements any sport. barre3’s unique feature is the emphasis on improving flexibility, and this is besides the fact that there are movements that strengthen specific muscles important to running. The stretches are very specific and it will equally help others who want to improve on this aspect. With proper establishment of barre3 principles, barre3 can also help people with biomechanical issues (e.g. arthritic, osteoporotic)
The mind and body aspect of barre3 is another plus for more serious athletes; it helps improve focus.
Is this safe for pregnant women?
Although pregnancy is not the best time to start anything new, yes, it is safe for women who have been exercising before pregnancy. barre3 exercises will help mommies improve their function with the big changes that come with their condition. A periodic medical certificate is required since it is a fact that with every month or even every day of being pregnant there are a lot of changes that occur in a mother’s condition.
Can barre3 be for men as well? It looks like it’s only for women and dancers.
Yes, definitely. The word ‘grace’ means achieving the strong position of your spine before performing movements that will look, at some point, effortless. barre3 is core conditioning. It teaches us to do push-ups and pull-ups by drawing the strength from our core, for example. Moreover, there are a lot of interesting movements using the versatility of the ballet barre, not confining it to dance moves. Again…definitely for men and women alike, dancers and non-dancers!
I haven’t tried exercising before. Can I do this?
Yes, of course. This is the best exercise to try since you will be taught to find your ‘most correct posture’ before doing the movements. But like trying anything for the first time, you’ll perform better if you have enough rest or sleep and are properly nourished. And when in class, pay attention to your barre3 trainer and enjoy!
I have back pain. Can barre3 help me alleviate this?
As with any sport or activity that you’re trying for the first time,
make sure to consult with a doctor to rule out any existing condition. This is the same for all post-operative students and those with injuries. If so, a medical certificate is strictly required.
The barre3’s focus is achieving good posture. It promotes muscular balance, relieves tightness and strengthens weakened muscles. More importantly, it conditions your core (not just your abdominals but your other postural muscles such as upper and lower back, etc.). This will eventually reduce your back pain, if not alleviate it.
